Out
of study of the Kabbalah, other writings by Jewish mystics
and the Hebrew language in general, I learned of what the ancients
perceived as the elemental powers of the Hebrew alphabet itself.
Rather than being simply a visual means of communication, the
Hebrew characters were worshiped as sentient, intelligent entities,
and as being the very first inventions of G-d, long before the
creation of the universe itself.
These
"vibrations" are the material from which all of reality
sprang. They obviously are quite powerful, and gave rise to
the concept of the amulet, a personal invocation of the powers
of the alphabetic characters in an attempt to protect the individual
from the evils of life. The Kamayah Series (Hebrew for
amulet, or more literally, to bind) is a collection
of contem-porary amulets with which I uncover the powers of
these universal forces by combining the letters in various configurations.
